Centroid checking

Validation of centroids when you choose to preserve user-provided geocodes upon import.

Verisk Synergy Studio checks whether each provided geocode is a known centroid for the highest-resolution provided area or the city. This check avoids reverse geocoding previously-geocoded centroids and has the following three important effects:

  • Prevents centroids that lie outside the boundary from moving to the containing boundary. This scenario is easiest to envision with a crescent-shaped area; however, exposure-weighted centroids can also be outside of the associated boundary. Without this centroid check, the import-export-import process does not yield stable results.
  • Prevents Verisk Synergy Studio from reverse geocoding lower-resolution centroids as higher-resolution user points.
  • Enables Verisk Synergy Studio to detect older centroids and follow the mapping to the corresponding new records. For remodeled geographies, Verisk Synergy Studio moves the geocode along with the data. This effect is significant when Verisk Synergy Studio performs a large amount of remapping. Without this check, all old area centroids would reverse geocode to the highest available resolution.

Additional considerations

  • If the centroid does not match the highest-resolution provided area or the city, then Verisk Synergy Studio proceeds to the normal reverse geocoding workflow.
  • This logic is not adequate for situations such as in the United States, where Verisk Synergy Studio geocodes to a subarea centroid, but fills the corresponding postal data. This process would not match the centroid for the highest provided resolution and would therefore proceed to the normal reverse geocoding workflow.
Note: To emphasize, Verisk Synergy Studio uses the process that this topic describes for geocoding locations in the specific countries for which Verisk Synergy Studio supports updated geocoding functionality.
  • Since Verisk Synergy Studio uses float values for centroids, Verisk Synergy Studio uses a .0001 tolerance for matches.
